To do this, only standard programs from Apple will be needed.

By default, the iPhone takes photos in Heif format. Although it has many advantages, such images are not suitable for downloading to some sites and do not open on all devices. The problem is solved by the converting of the image into the good old JPEG.

For this task, there are many third -party services and sites, but you can easily do with applications that are already on any iPhone or Mac.

There are great chances that you need to convert the file precisely because it was not accepted by the site or service that does not support Heif. But you can check the format directly on the iPhone with iOS 15 and newer using the standard “Photo” application.

Just open the desired image and swipe from the bottom up. Metadata of the picture will open, its format will be indicated here.

If you have an older version of iOS, you will have to use third-party applications that show EXIF files.

How to convert HEIF in JPEG

Method 1. On the iPhone

1. Open the desired image in the “Photo” application.
2. Click “Share” and select “copy photos”.
3. Open the “Files” application.
4. Hold your finger on the free section of the storage until the context menu appears. Select “insert”.

Done: The ICLOUD has a file “Image JPEG”, which can be sent through any accessible application or save to the gallery.

Method 2. On MacOS Montery

A convenient tool has appeared in the new version of MacOS, which allows you to change the file format in a couple of clicks. To do this, just find the desired file in Finder, click on it with the right mouse button and select “quick actions” → “Transform the image”.

Next, you can choose the format (also available PNG) and the size of the image – from small to real. After that, click Convert to JPEG.

This will create in the folder in which the original file is located, its copy – but already with the resolution of JPEG. This method is also suitable for mass conversion of images: for this it is enough to select all the necessary files, and then repeat the steps described above.

Method 3. On MacOS Big Sur and below

If you are not in a hurry to update the computer to the current version of the OS, you can convert photos through the standard View utility.  

1. Open the HEIF file through “View” (by default it will open in this program, but if another program is assigned for HeIF, do it manually through the click by the right mouse button → “Open View” → “View”).
2. In the upper menu, select “File” → “Export”.
3. If necessary, change the export settings (name, saving folder, format and quality), then click “Save”.

How to photograph immediately in JPEG

HEIF can significantly save space on the drive almost twice without prejudice to the quality, and after the changes, the file can be returned to the original state due to the preservation of the history of editing. But if you constantly have to convert HEIF, it is easier to change the camera settings to immediately shoot in JPEG. For this:

1. Open the iPhone settings.
2. Go to the “Camera” section → “Formats”.
3. Choose the option “most compatible”.

Ready: Now all the photos will be saved in JPEG. It is worth noting that when choosing such a format, you cannot shoot 4K videos with a frequency of 60 frames per second, as well as 1080p with a frequency of 240 frames per second.
