What is Shibari
The art of Shibari originates in Japanese combat techniques of binding Khojo-Jutsu. Their goal was not only to immobilize the prisoner, but also to emphasize his social status – for this different methods of strapping were used. With the end of the wars, the binding techniques migrated into ordinary life: women were replaced by prisoners, and the process itself began to be appreciated for the beauty of the strapping.
Now Shibari is, first of all, the skill of aesthetic rope bandage, not devoid of a meditative property. And of course, it has an erotic subtext: Shibari can be used to fix a partner (more often, but not necessarily women). In addition, individual binding elements can affect its erogenous zones.

Materials
Ropes are of two types: natural and synthetic. The latter are more wear-resistant, but still they are not the best option: they hold the knot worse and can leave burns on the skin.
With ropes made of natural materials, everything is also not so simple. Cotton – the softest, but this can become a problem for lovers of acute sensations. Linen ropes are also soft, but sometimes they can contain hard inclusions that can damage the skin.
Classics of the genre – jute ropes. They are rather soft so as not to injure, but also to the best of rude, so that a person feels fixation.
Shibari ropes can be made from other natural materials. Make a choice based on your own sensations and feelings of a partner. And better buy processed ropes in specialized stores.
Size, length, quantity
In order not to get confused in a variety of sizes, first select the ropes of medium thickness: 6-8 mm. Subtle options will not look so beautiful and very cut into the body. It is more difficult to work with thick, and they are used more often to distribute a strong load (for example, when suspending, and this is definitely not the first step in Shibari).
As for the length, two or three meter ropes are convenient for binding the arms and legs. Ropes 8-12 meters long are used for strapping breasts and hips, and longer cuts are needed for strapping the whole body.
The number of ropes depends on the length (usually, the longer, the less they need) and on the number of nodes and the density of the strapping. Simply put, you can tie one knot with one short rope. But if you want to create a complex pattern, you need two or three, or even more.

Safety precautions
Possible problems
Nerves damage are one of the most common injuries. It is no less dangerous to squeeze the vessels. Therefore, if a person has problems with nerves or vessels (or predisposition to them), it is worth thinking again before practicing shibari.
One way or another, there are points that you need to handle especially carefully:
- The radial nerve on the outside of the hand between the triceps and the deltoid muscle. It is better to lay the rope below this area.
- Shoulder plexus in the armpit. This area is better not to use at all.
- Neck. This zone is also prohibited: you can trite suffocation.
- Wrists. Need to be binded without unnecessary pressure, so as not to damage the nerves.
- The femoral artery is about 10 cm below the inguinal region. It should not be too excited by ropes and knots.
Diabetes, asthma, joint problems or pressure – all this can also be a contraindication to Shibari. Well, or at least, these diseases need to be reported in advance.
Communication
Communication is an important condition for any action that implies a limitation of movement. Firstly, the partners must discuss in advance what they want, and follow these agreements. Trust is the basis of any such practices.
Secondly, in the process of binding the submissive (the one who is associated) should give feedback: which pose and degree of fixation is permissible, is there any pain, how much it can be endured.
